rules for outlet shopping

Mini was in need of some new kicks (can't these kids stop growing so fast?) and since I'm super adament about not paying full-price for any kids clothes it was a good time to venture out to the Chicago Premium Outlet in Aurora!  Now going to the outlets can be amazing because of all the gear you can collect at a fraction of what you would normally pay at the mall, but it is easy to go a little overboard.  So I've put together a few trusty rules that will help you stay on track when outlet shopping.

  • Look at the mall map before you go.  If you don't have all day to spend at the outlet mall, or want to avoid traffic on the way home - know which stores are a "must".

  • Have a short (or long list) of items you "need".  When you get to the outlet mall, first search for all the items on your "need" list and check them off before you start splurging on other things that just happen to catch your eye.
  • Have a list of items you DON'T need.  I'm guilty of buying things because it's an additional 75% off and even though I'm luke warm about that item, I buy it because of the price.  Those items end up sitting in my closet un-touched and eventually get donated.  Talk about waste of money!
  • Try to go during off hours.  You don't have to take a day off to take advantage of off hours - it's just a matter of either going at the beginning or end of the shopping day.  This way allows for you to avoid the long check out lines that can form during prime hours and gives you more time to browse at every store.
  • Plan on your day accordingly.  Going to an outlet mall is a true excursion so plan to spend a few hours there.  Majority of outlet malls are not within city limits (for us it's about an hour) and if you don't have a car, know that there are options.  Check out your local outlet mall's transportation options (because they exist!!!). The Chicago Premium Outlets have a Shopping Shuttle on the weekends that departs Union Station at 10am and leaves the outlets at 4pm - only $19.99 for the round trip ride.  A nice alternative if you don't have a car.  Reservations can be made through Weekend Shopping Shuttle by Pontarelli Companies.
  • Try before you buy.  I'm notorious for never trying on clothes, but if you don't live anywhere near the outlet it could be a hassle trying to return the item later.

    • Enjoy all your purchases.  This one is obvi a no brainer, but always a good reminder to appreciate your great finds!
