teddy bear picnic at emerald city theater company

Last weekend we had the pleasure of attending a Teddy Bear Picnic at the Emerald City Theater Company for a two-year-old's birthday party.  We drive by this place weekly and I automatically assumed that it was out of Liam's age range, but alas I was mistaken and we participated in a fantastic morning of adventures with a family bears who welcomed us to their picnic.

In this city it's hard to keep up with all the great things available to keep toddlers entertained and engaged.  Everything from the many museums, drop-in playrooms, music classes, etc - it's tough to try them all.  However, the Teddy Bear Picnic is a must experience and I guarantee it is fun for everyone in the family.

The Teddy Bear Picnic is an interactive theater experience that begins right at the moment you walk into the door.  While the show itself is only 45-minutes, the lobby is set-up as a colorful playroom with toys, books and trinkets that are available to play with until the show starts.  When the show is ready to begin, families are ushered into the next room where the "theater" is set up with picnic blankets complete with baskets of goodies for every family.  While each family has a designated area, it's designed so that kids can roam around freely throughout the show, as my little guy decided to do.  Instead of sitting on our blanket he decided to play a role in the show the entire time.  Throughout the performance, the bears interacted with all picnic attendees and goodies in the basket allowed kids to participate easily.  Everything from sharing food, making honey and a little bit of dancing are covered in the show.

While they are a small, but mighty team of actors, they do a great job of creating a unique environment that will make families feel like they are really at a picnic with the cuddly family of bears.  I absolutely would go to this picnic again and if you hope to one day attend, be sure to reserve your tickets soon.  The show only seats a handful of families and tickets sell out fast.
